v8.4.4 Changing Username and / or Passkey is not persistent - reverts to old settings after a number of WUs.
Folding host is on Ubuntu. Host info at the end.
I checked the config file for any issues "Config: /etc/fah-client/config.xml" - the config file is empty, entire file contents "<config/>"

The Username and Passkey were set for "[EV]GM_EV1", then after 11 WUs in this case, the Username and Passkey reverted to the old values on their own. The host was not touched when these reverted. I only noticed when I checked later that the credit was not showing up under the correct Username "[EV]GM_EV1" in the FAH webapps https://apps.foldingathome.org/bonus . I actually changed the Username and Passkey together when I found that changing just the Passkey for an existing user did not persist - same issues - reverts to the old value after a number of WUs / hours.

Are you sure you have the correct info in the account settings, and that the client is linked to correct account?

The local client can be linked to a different account than the logged in one.

Click the gear for the machine.
Click the link/unlink button.

I'm guessing you have more than one web control account.

I should only intentionally have one webcontrol account. Though I had to try a number of things to get the v8 client installed some months back when I did it - took a couple days... So not entirely sure of all the things I did.

How can I check how many webcontrol accounts I have?

Is there a log line containing a webcontrol account identifier in the logs so that I can use to check if it's switching accounts?

Also on using the logs, it's convenient to use the View machine log / View Work Unit log viewers in the web control to remotely retrieve the logs without having to go over to the folding host (switch the HDMI, fiddle with the TV, login...).

But the log viewer doesn't allow selections more than a screen full making pasting a long log together rather tedious.

The search function is cool, but without a date in each logline, it's hard to find the actual line in the full log when the machine has been folding 24x7 for weeks.

The search function would be cooler if clicking on one of the search lines would take you to that line in the full log, even better if there was a button or some way to go back from the full log to the search results - as you check various messages to debug which are related to the issue.

I looked for these account messages but they did not seem to correlate one for one with every event where the Username reverted to the old value. Hard to tell because I can't see the Passkey reversions in the logs.

Searching for "account" in all of the machine log:

In the DB I can find one account using the name [eVTOL]Joby but no accounts using the name [EV]GM_EV1. If you change your account's user name it will affect all of then machines associated with the account. There is no way to set some machines in the account to use one user name and others to use another name.

@jcoffland
Thanks for checking on my folding accounts!

I setup the account with [eVTOL]Joby but then something happened on my machine and the client dumped 2000+ in 15 hours from 09.05, 12pm to 09.06, 3am bringing my % Finished down to 52.73%. I rebooted my host and all was working again except that my username was ruined. Recovery would require finishing 12,750 WUs with no failures and no bonus which at 20 WUs per day that my client completes translates to 637 days (1.7 years). I got the suggestion to update to Alpha 8.4.4 which has a fix to delay after dumping a WU. Since then, I've only lost one WU out of 120 or so, and the one I lost may have been because I was working on the host at the time.

So I found out in the forum that I can generate a new passkey for the same Username to recover the bonus for my Username. I did that and it worked until the client reverted back to my old passkey after a dozen or so WUs. This happened like 3 times and then I tried setting the client to a new Username and passkey pair to see if that would persist, but the same thing happens - after a dozen or so WUs it reverts back to [eVTOL]Joby and the original passkey which is poisoned by the client rapidly dumping WUs. So now I'm watching the host and re-entering the Username / passkey every time it gets wiped out, but I may not catch it for several hours and doing this once or twice a day at weird hours is not sustainable.

I have yet to find the cause of the passkey and Username / passkey getting reverted or anyway to fix this. The Username / passkey is not stored in the config file "Config: /etc/fah-client/config.xml" - the config file is empty, entire file contents are "<config/>". So I can't find where to make the passkey persist.

v8.3.5 client rapid dumping of WUs ruined my folding user

Ahhhh... I'll try to change the passkey in the Account settings page - this looks promising:
https://v8-4.foldingathome.org/account/settings

Should the client flag some sort of warning or error if the user sets the Username and passkey on a folding machine to something different than what's in the account settings?

Why would one set a different Username and passkey on the folding machine to something different than https://v8-4.foldingathome.org/account/settings ?

I'm trying to understand this and keep others from running into the same issues I have.

Thanks!

So if you do not login to your F@H account Web Control will let you change the machine's settings including user name, team and passkey. However, it will eventually resync with the account settings. If you're always logged in then the only way to change your those settings is via the account settings. The option will not be available in the machine settings.

I suppose if the machine is synced to an account, Web Control should not let you set the machine local settings even if you're not logged in on Web Control to avoid confusion. It should probably instead show a message in machine settings telling you to set those settings via the account.
