Releasing the app on the Play Store would offer a convenient and secure method for users to download and keep it updated.

This is planned, but not in the near future. I consider Locus not to be production ready yet. I'll also need to figure out how to properly align with the data privacy regulations from the Google Play Store. Google for example requires the developer to explain how data is used and where it is shared. This is a bit problematic in Locus' case as the original data isn't readable by the Nostr servers but is still being stored on them.
