Tell us about your setup:

What iDevice are you using? iPad Mini 2
On what version of iOS is it? iOS 12.5.6
What version of checkra1n are you using? 0.12.4 beta
What is your host system (OS version? Hackintosh? VM? etc.)? Ubuntu 20.04
How are you connecting to the device (USB-A? USB-C? Apple/3rd party cable? Through a USB hub?)? USB-A with Apple Lightening
What are the steps to reproduce the issue?
Followed the guide identically until I got to linux kernel. For creating .config and menu config needed to have "LLVM=-12" so it would use an updated version and remove the linker error. Also did "LLVM=12" for compiling the kernel. All looked good to that point. Ran dtbpack and looked good. Ran the load_linux script with the ramdisk img in this repo (trying not to overcomplicate my life) and get the "Waiting for device..." print.

...
What do you expect, and what is happening instead?
Unplug and replug my cable. NOTHING HAPPENS. My usb-A is in my SS port. I did a jailbreak on this device to make sure it would connect and work with checkra1n alone and it does work but I am assuming that the device isn't being recognized by the load_linux script. I found some tweets where folks were encouraged to change the devices variable in dtbpack.sh but I didn't think we needed to do that in the newer version. OK - TOO MANY WORDS. I think I broke my brain lol
