Anticipated Changes

The following sections detail changes that are anticipated, such as additional mappings for the Unicode CMap resources, and the prospects for Supplements 7 and 8.

Additional CMap Resource Mappings

As of this writing, there are no mappings that are scheduled to be added to the Unicode CMap resources for this character collection.

Adobe-Japan1-7

Supplement 7 will include exactly two glyphs—CIDs 23058 and 23059—that correspond to U+32FF, which has been reserved for the two-kanji square ligature that represents Japan's forthcoming new era name whose official use begins on 2019-05-01. This character will be included in Unicode Version 12.1. CID+23058 will map from U+32FF, and CID+23059 is its vertical variant that will be accessible via the 'vert' GSUB feature. Adobe-Japan1-7 will be published shortly after the name of the new era is announced. As a result, any glyphs that were Supplement 7 candidates are now Supplement 8 candidates.

Note that the CMap Resources and Mapping Resources for PDF projects were updated on 2018-07-30 to reflect the CIDs and code points that correspond to Adobe-Japan1-7.

Adobe-Japan1-8 Candidates

The following are candidate glyphs for Supplement 8:

  • Three additional glyphs to fully support JIS X 0212-1990 prototypical glyphs.
  • Additional U-PRESS glyphs that were established shortly after Supplement 6 was published.
  • Additional glyphs to support the ARIB STD-B24 standard.

The following table shows the three glyphs for JIS X 0212-1990 kanji that are considered candidates for Supplement 8, along with their related forms that are in Supplement 5. Adobe-Japan2-0 CIDs are also provided for reference.

JIS X 0212 Adobe-Japan2-0 Supplement 5 Kanji JIS X 0213 Unicode
3443 CID+2001 CID+17749 2-1410 U+6680
3811 CID+2345 CID+16923 1-8639 U+6BA9
3868 CID+2402 CID+16928 1-8652 U+6C74

That is all.
