Canonical links are used when content is republished on different websites. Every republished page has an extra value in the header that links to the original article. This avoids being "punished" for having the same content on different websites.

E.g. https://foojay.io/today/new-user-interface-for-jfx-central-the-home-for-all-javafx-information-part-1/
