Issue #315 was closed, but users still experience a lag of about 0.5 seconds until the menu applet opens.

I have tested this on linuxmint 14 with nightly cinnamon.

It's very visibly delayed for me (even immediately after closing it, the next time it comes up it still takes at least 0.5s), and seems to have got worse with the 1.6 → 1.8 upgrade. Previously it was not terribly fast, now it feels annoyingly laggy, and the fade in animation is completely absent (in 1.6 it was clipped, but vestigially present), unlike with all other applets. There's also a visible jump after the menu opens while it gets the scrollbar in order, seemingly as it populates the "All Apps" list. Running Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2520M @ 2.50GHz with 8GB RAM.

Agree, it lags a lot. The lowest lag I get is still ~0.5s.
After booting (even if I wait a long while), it takes ~3s to open. Unfortunately, I experienced no subjective speed gain when I moved from 1.6 to 1.8 even though the devs worked a lot on optimizing the situation. There must still be huge room for improvement. Just compare to, say, MATE. That's speed.

The closing animation also lags, compared to say the network applet

This is still an issue on cinnamon 2.0.13. Opening the menu first time takes several seconds on my i7 laptop. After that the delay is much shorter but often noticeable.

Is the menu loading icons synchronously before displaying itself or something like that? I think this should be given high priority as the menu is one of the most used functions in cinnamon and it should be really smooth.

I believe, significant work has gone into this. Could you check if this issue occurs in latest Cinnamon 2.2 (Mint 17)?

~$ cinnamon --version
Cinnamon 2.2.16

On an AMD desktop PC (Phenom II X4) this is much better than in earlier versions, but still not instant. 1/4s delay, I would guess. On my i7 notebook with a fast SSD I'd say it is pretty much instant.

It's very slow. "Configurable Menu" applet, which is fork of original Cinnamon menu fixed it long time ago, their menu opens instantly.

+1
I suggest half-workaround. Listen to keyboard input instantly after Win button was pressed or menu clicked

@wilecoyote2015, is this still an issue for you in Cinnamon 3.0?

Menu appears instantly on Cinnamon 3.2.7. I think this has been fixed.

@JosephMcc, can we close this issue?
