Closing a tab sitting at the end of a tab group sends focus to a different tab group, instead of to the end of the same group

If I have tab groups like Group1: [tabA tabB] and Group2: [tabC tabD tabE], have selected Group2:tabE, am not in Panorama View mode, and close Group2:tabE, then instead of the focus moving to Group2:tabD, the focus will move to one of the tabs in Group1

I find this behavior also on closing tabs that are not the last tab in the group; they can be anywhere in the group, from what I see, and closing them will elicit the same behavior (i.e., moving the focus to a tab in another group).

Have you changed any settings for what Firefox does when you close a tab?
For me Firefox always goes to the last active tab in the current group, and I can't seem to reproduce what you are seeing..

OK, I think I identified the culprit: the Firefox extension "Select After Closing Current". When I disabled it, now I get the expected behavior. Apparently this is known to the writers of the "Select After Closing Current" extension:

"Update: From Firefox 65, this extension can prevent the browser's default selection, so flashing, Ctrl+Tab order changes and tab discarding incompatibility are fixed. Firefox 65 is the current Developer Edition and will be released on 2019-01-29.

After closing a tab that is currently selected, Firefox usually moves the focus to the tab on the right. This extension can change this behavior and select another tab according to the preference instead."
