On OSX the latest ffmpeg version installed by homebrew (1.1.3) produces a crash when trying an example extractor. Version 0.8 worked for me. The latest supported version should be in the documentation.

I've had the same problem -- does ffmpeg version 0.8.x work?

There are issues with a lot of different versions of ffmpeg right now (some work, some don't, not sure which ones...). It's not an ffmpeg problem, it's a problem with how Essentia uses it, I'll try to have a look at it soon as it's really an annoying problem and a dealbreaker for people wanting to use it...

I got it working with 0.8 as well.

This should now be fixed, all versions of ffmpeg I could try now work properly (mac os homebrew 0.11.1 and 1.2.1, debian squeeze and wheezy too).
