OpenTTD Military Items NewGRF file

About

Military Items provides military aircraft from around the world, airports and other military stuff. The set is not aimed at specific military operators or manufacturers, but rather gives you a broad selection so that you can be your own company. To support that goal, the vehicles are in dual company colours.

Usage and Parameters

The first aircraft is available from 1913. Build (small) airports to use aircraft.

By default military airplanes (especially fighters) can carry only limited types of cargo. But this set also consists of heavy-lift military transport aircraft.

By default each vehicle can be purchased in similar years like in real life. The vehicle life corresponds to use by users anywhere in the world.

The first airport is available from 1941. Build carrier-like airport to simulate aircraft carrier and to use naval aircraft.

Parameters

The set provides parameters:

  • Enable custom airports
    • Enable military theme airports in game
  • Disable airport noise limit
    • Sets the noise generated by every airport to zero.
  • Aircraft purchase cost multiplier
    • You can set purchase cost multiplier from 1/16x to 16x
  • Aircraft running cost multiplier
    • You can set running cost multiplier from 1/16x to 16x
  • Enable aircraft ranges
    • Limits the range of aircraft. Range is set similar to World Airliners Set. Default Limited Aircraft range.
  • Disable date restrictions for airports
    • Make possibility to purchase airports without date limitations. Default False.

  • Disable default aircraft
    • Disable default helicopters and aircraft in game

Contents

The set contains several airports based on aircraft carriers. Due to the limitations of the game, these airports are adapted, ie. the bridge is on the opposite side, the airport is wider than an aircraft carrier, etc.

Normal airports are also available.

All airports are only available in north heading.

Requests

If you like a particular vehicle to be added to the set, you can make a request for that. Post your request in the development topic at TT-Forums.net (https://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=88858) and preferably also to the issue tracker at the github repository (https://github.com/adpro/openttd-military-grf/issues) such that the request is not lost.

To avoid disappointment, consider the following rules for requests:

  • The manufacturer and model must not already be present in the set;
  • If the manufacturer is present in the set, the model must fill a regional or time frame gap;
  • Sufficient information must be available to draw and code the vehicle;
  • The development team and author reserves the right to interpret these rules more like guidelines.

Liveries

Pull-requests (PRs) with new liveries are welcomed. Identification by country, military branch (air force, navy, army), wing/squadron are needed for proper naming scheme. In this case, best to use my voxel model for the aircraft/helicopter and paint the livery on it (e.g. in MagicaVoxel). Ideally a PR voxel of the model with the livery, write the designation in English in military-grf/lang/english.lng in the livery section (line 306+) to uniquely identify the livery.

The form of the ID to identify the livery in the language file is STR_LIV_AIR_{country iso alpha-2}{military branch abbrev}_{unit}, e.g. STR_LIV_AIR_USN_VF24 : U.S. Navy VF-24. The voxel model identification corresponding to the designation above is always based on the 2CC or AF variant. If the model has the _landing variant, then paint this variant. It is always easier to erase the landing gear than to draw it :) If the original model name with Air Force (AF) livery is e.g. air_f14_af_landing.vox, then the VF-24 livery should be in the file air_f14_usnvf24_landing.vox.

If you don't master github, it is possible to submit the livery as a vox model in a post to the forum development thread. I will read it and convert it to grf in next possible release with credit. All your contributions are considered to be under GNU GPL v2 license.

For help with identification here are some useful tables.

3D models

Some voxel models are based on existing free 3D models. These models are often converted and heavily edited in Magica Voxel. However, without the original 3D models, they would not have been created so easily and accurately. Therefore, credit to their authors:
