Payment links
Using Apple Pay and Google Pay

Payment links allow your service to receive online payments from your users. You don’t need to have a digital service to use payment links.

You can add a payment link to paper forms, letters or emails - or wherever you’d like your users to see it.

You can now take payments using Apple Pay or Google Pay on GOV.UK Pay.

How Apple Pay and Google Pay works

Benefits of using online payments

Online payments are 4 times more cost effective than offline methods, like cheques, money orders and cash payments.

By using payment links your service can:

Any user with Apple Pay or Google Pay enabled can make payments on your service in seconds.

Because Apple Pay and Google already have users details, they don’t have to fill them in again on GOV.UK Pay. They simply have to:

speed up payment processes - you’ll be able to receive payments and issue refunds much quicker

reduce human error and have fewer manual processes, like taking card payments over the phone

receive fewer cheques, BACS and cash payments

click pay

check their details which have been automatically completed

confirm payment

Setting up a payment link

A payment link is quick and easy to set up and is ready to use right away. You don’t need any technical knowledge to create a payment link. You can create a payment link for a single user or make it reusable for all your users.

The entire process takes users seconds.

The Benefits of Apple Pay and Google Pay

Using Apple Pay or Google Pay:

is a more secure way to pay - your real card details are never stored or transferred and only you can authorise payment biometrically using fingerprint or facial recognition

makes it quicker - the whole process takes a few seconds

makes paying easier - there are no forms to fill in as all the users information is played back from Apple Pay or Google Pay before users commit to the payment

reduces errors - users don’t have to retype any of their details, Apple or Google pass on their verified details

Add the payment link where your users can see it, like in a paper form, letter or email - or even on your website.

Using Apple Pay means you don’t have to go through 3DS or 3DS2 authentication as that security is built-in. This makes it more secure for services to take payment as a user can’t create a chargeback (for fraud) on a payment.

Who can use Apple Pay and Google Pay

When your users access your payment link, they’ll be able to make an online card payment. Your users will receive a payment reference number and a confirmation email. You can use your own payment reference number or let us create one for you.

GOV.UK Pay currently only offer Apple Pay and Google Pay with Worldpay.

If you enable Google Pay in your payment settings credit and debit cards will also automatically be accepted.

What's next

Get started with payment links

In future, we intend to offer Apple Pay and Google Pay with our payment service provider, Stripe.

We are also looking at including other digital wallets, for instance Samsung Pay, depending on user demand.
