These things should work:

if input dates are YYYY or
YYYY-MM or
YYYY-MM-DD infer the desired format.
option for partials, e.g. with YYYY include states that existed on first of month, last of month, some specific date, or at any point (; more than x amount of time?).
remove the warning about exceeding G&W end date, maybe just add this to package info doc somewhere.
