In my opinion it would be better if halftiled windows have the titlebar and window buttons on it, as it was under Unity and only for maximized windows they get moved to the panel. Something like this:

Are there any plans on implementing a global menu in future versions? The Ubuntu Mate guys seem to patch unity-gtk-module, because they implemented a global menu in Mate.
There is already a Global Menu extension in the works but lestcape has stopped development, because he found no solution of implementing a global menu under Wayland. Maybe you can work together and bring Unity back to it's users.

Thank you for your work!

@mrprobot thank you for your input.

Tiled windows
Keeping titlebars in tiled windows seems like a sane default and since this is the behaviour in Unity, we will implement it. When we add settings to the extension it will allow users to modify the behaviour.

Global menu
As for the global menu, it is not possible to do it now and we have no plans to implement it. I have tried to create a HUD for gnome (https://github.com/hardpixel/gnome-hud) and it currently works only with gtk3 apps and libre-office and not all menus are exposed to dbus.

Right now the only way to get the full menu structure of an application, with wayland support, is plotinus (https://github.com/p-e-w/plotinus) wich has a dbus api that can be used to create a global menu, but it works only with gtk3 apps.

@mrprobot for my side, waverer I can contribute if i have the time i will do it. I don't think anyway that the main problem of the global menu could be resolved with more peoples. It can be resolved easy with the support of the Gtk developers. Also I don't think plotinus will work on Wayland. It ask over a dbus exactly the same that I can not get (The dbus window properties).

@jonian I have trying to implemented a way to parse and draw the windows buttons from the gtk theme. It needed an xml parser(I make the parse with python), but i was unhappy with the result. If some how we can parse the gtk theme to extract the windows buttons will be a really good thing, as we can follow the theme specification to create the window buttons.
