  • PR Description

Remove the loader panels that used to show for pull, push, and fetch, and show a waiting status in the status bar instead, like we do for other long-running operations.

  • Please check if the PR fulfills these requirements
  • Cheatsheets are up-to-date (run go run scripts/cheatsheet/main.go generate)
  • Code has been formatted (see here)
  • Tests have been added/updated (see here for the integration test guide)
  • Text is internationalised (see here)
  • Docs (specifically docs/Config.md) have been updated if necessary
  • You've read through your own file changes for silly mistakes etc

The last commit (dd9d885) is my attempt at fixing the hanging tests that I talked about here. It feels a little bit over-engineered to me, let me know what you think, or if you have any better ideas.

I prefer the original loader mostly because using a loader like this makes our intermittent micro-freezes less apparent. I have no idea what causes those micro-freezes (presumably something blocking the UI thread) but I find the spinner makes the app seem snappier

OK, happy to drop the commit again, I actually don't care too much either way.

I'd add a comment here explaining what it means to add a subtask, how it will affect things, why you would want to do it etc

I added some documentation above the class that explains this a bit more (ce804d6). So far it didn't even say what it means to pause a task in the first place, or why you would want to do it.

Code looks good, but if I run:

go run cmd/integration_test/main.go cli --slow pkg/integration/tests/sync/push_with_credential_prompt.go

Locally, it hangs and fails. I'm surprised CI passes. Does this test pass locally for you?

@stefanhaller
Copy link
Collaborator Author

Yes, it hangs for me too, but only with --slow. Will have a look (now that it's possible to debug tests).

Argh, we should change to a better implementation of options parsing; right now, -slow and -debug are exclusive...

@jesseduffield
Copy link
Owner

Agreed. We could make that code more flexible manually or use flaggy as the lazygit application does

@stefanhaller
Copy link
Collaborator Author

I looked into using flaggy, but didn't get very far; the TrailingArguments feature doesn't seem to work the way I'd expect it to, so I couldn't get the test names. It should also be easy enough to roll our own loop. I eventually stopped spending time on that when I realized that I could just use INPUT_DELAY=600 go run cmd/integration_test/main.go cli -debug ..., so I rather focused on the actual problem of the hanging test.

As for that, I couldn't really find it yet. So far my impression is that it has something to do with the captions that are set in pressFast; they cause a render on the main thread and then wait for idle. If I comment out the code in GuiDriver.SetCaption, it doesn't hang on the password prompt. (It does hang again at the end though.)

I know that's not much yet, just saying what I know so far in case you have any ideas. Otherwise, will keep looking tomorrow.

That's probably a good idea anyway (added in ca49635), but doesn't solve the problem.

I finally got around to investigating the hanging push_with_credential_prompt test. It's actually very obvious why it hangs: the renderAppStatus ticker keeps running while tasks are paused. Normally, all the busy work that's happening here is included in the one busy period that is started by the original key press that triggered an action; here, however, the renderAppStatus ticker gets triggered while we're not considered busy, so this does its OnUIThread call and creates a short-lived busy task, and when that task is deleted (on the main thread), withMutex tries to notify listeners that we just became idle; but there's nobody waiting for that, so the call to write to the listener channel blocks. And since we're inside withMutex there, this causes a deadlock as soon as the next task is getting created, e.g. for the SetCaption call when typing the second character of the username.

While this is all very obvious (once you have figured it out 😄), it's not very clear to me what to do about it. I added a hack commit (e4152c8) that seems to solve it, by just skipping UI updates in the renderAppStatus ticker while we're paused. It seems that the waiting status should stop spinning anyway while the user is prompted. But it feels very hacky to me; any better ideas?

@jesseduffield
Copy link
Owner

Good investigation, that makes sense.

As for the solution, it does feel hacky. I don't feel great about exposing the NoMutex methods on the task interface because it means we can no longer enforce invariants re: concurrency.

Also, I don't think this implementation is concurrent-safe as-is: pausing the task really should block until we know for certain that we're not going to be rendering the loader again until it's resumed. Right now I'm pretty sure there's a race condition where self.disabled could return true right before the task is paused, meaning that we can make a call to OnUIThread after the task is paused. We could fix this with a mutex on the app status helper (or we could extract that loading loop into a goroutine that we communicate with via blocking channels)

Back to the issue of overriding the NoMutex methods, an alternative approach is to have an 'onPause' and 'onResume' callback passed to the code that actually does the pausing/resuming. It means we need to expand the interface to SyncCommands.Push (and related sync methods) to accept those args and pass them down. That too doesn't feel great.

Nothing else comes to mind but I'll continue to think about it

@stefanhaller
Copy link
Collaborator Author

I had the same concern about the race condition around self.disabled, good that you confirm that. I first wanted to hear you general thoughts on all this before I go look for a solution for this.

I'm also unsure about the UX. Right now, the spinner stops wherever it currently is, so it might say Pushing \ while you are prompted for input. I wasn't sure that's acceptable. Do we want to remove the spinner while prompting (or maybe even the whole status text)?.

@jesseduffield
Copy link
Owner

Yeah I say we remove the loading text entirely when it's paused. If we pass explicit onPause and onResume callbacks to the push method then we could just delete the task and create a new one removing the need for an actual pause (i.e. the onResume callback would start the loader again). Again, I don't feel great about that but it does sound worthy of exploration.

@stefanhaller
Copy link

stefanhaller commented Sep 20, 2023

Deleting the task and creating a new one solves it nicely, and is the least hacky solution so far.

Aaand, it turns out that this is totally not a new problem on this branch. We have several commands on master that use WithWaitingStatus and can show credentials prompts (e.g. deleting a remote branch), so these suffer from the distracting status that keeps spinning while the prompt is showing; and if we had integration tests for these, they would hang in the same way. We just never noticed because we don't have any such tests.

So, I'm making a new PR (#3016) to fix the problem for these existing commands, including adding a new test for one of them. This PR is going to be a no-brainer then.

Makes sense, see fc868cd. I also renamed the variable to FastForwarding, and adapted the other languages as good as I could (template substitution would have been broken for these, as I changed the placeholders).

Looks good. This PR is good to merge!

As an aside, it would be cool to have some chatGPT powered translation tool. I hear chatGPT does a very good job at translating, far better than we could do with google translate. There's definitely a startup idea there

Just one thing otherwise LGTM

Now that we no longer show it in a loader panel, but in the app status view,
it's awkwardly long (the loading animation is much further to the right than for
other waiting status texts). Hopefully seeing just "Fast-forwarding <branch>" is
enough to be able to tell what's happening.

Something we'll want to keep an eye on is whether we need some additional UX to make the loading 'louder' (or the completion louder). Most actions in lazygit has observable consequences, but for example pulling may not actually change the state. Having the loader in the bottom left, although now consistent with other loaders, is on the periphery compared to the loader panel in the centre of the screen, and given how long-running pulls can be, the user may not want to be staring at the corner of the screen waiting for the loading to finish.

Just flagging that as something to keep an eye on as we adjust to the new UX

@stefanhaller
Copy link
Collaborator Author

Yes, I agree. It took me a little bit to get used to the new UX, I felt a little more "insecure" at first. However, it didn't take long to adapt, and now I absolutely love having more freedom to go and do other things while stuff is happening in the background. It makes everything feel faster. For example, after merging a branch I can now checkout master and pull, and while that's ongoing I can select the branch and delete it. Yes, I could do that before, but I had to dismiss the loader panel first, which always felt a little awkward. So for me it's definitely a change for the better, but yes, you have to pay attention to what actions you perform while others are still running.

@jesseduffield

Totally agree, I'm almost always escaping out of push/pull loader panels to do other stuff so I'm happy to no longer have to deal with that friction

I'm just going to mention that after two days of using this I'm still not feeling it. I keep double-taking thinking that the operation I performed failed. Considering that these operations are generally ones I expect to be blocking (I want to confirm they succeed before moving on) the old dialog overlay made a bit more sense.

Will continue to persevere but thought I'd add my 5 cents.

@stefanhaller
Copy link
Collaborator Author

This is valuable input, I was afraid that some users might feel this way. Well personally I'm very happy that they are not blocking, as I said above, so I wouldn't want to go back to the loader panel UI. We should probably think about ways to make the visual feedback louder, as Jesse said, without making it blocking. I'm not good at UI design, suggestions welcome.

Something inline in the pane / branch that is being operated on may work quite well. ie. replacing the status with a spinner of some kind (or even a placeholder) while the operation is run.

@stefanhaller
Copy link

That's an excellent idea. I quickly hacked something along those lines in #3021, could you give that a try? I think it's a big improvement. (It doesn't spin though, that would be hard to do, I'm afraid.)

### Release v0.32.4
#### Notes

Thank you to all that contributed with flushing out issues and
enhancements for K9s!
I'll try to mark some of these issues as fixed. But if you don't mind
grab the latest rev
and see if we're happier with some of the fixes!
If you've filed an issue please help me verify and close.

Your support, kindness and awesome suggestions to make K9s better are,
as ever, very much noted and appreciated!
Also big thanks to all that have allocated their own time to help others
on both slack and on this repo!!

As you may know, K9s is not pimped out by corps with deep pockets, thus
if you feel K9s is helping your Kubernetes journey,
please consider joining our [sponsorship

[`v0.41.0`](https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/releases/tag/v0.41.0)

[Compare
Source](https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/compare/v0.40.2...pre-0.41)

Hold on tight because this is a HUGE release! This release includes a
whopping 595 commits from a period of over 7 months, from 40 different
contributors. Thanks to everybody who made this possible, and apologies
for taking so long to actually release it: we'll be more frequent in
future!

Special thanks to Stefan Haller who is behind many of this release's
changes and who has been critical in getting this release across the
line.

I've made a video running through the big changes here:

[<img
src="https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/assets/8456633/f9b47c5e-f8b2-4b41-8f51-bf06b01046e2">](https://youtu.be/\_REmkoIyPW0)

#### What's Changed

Here's some highlighted features:

##### Range select

![range-select](https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/blob/assets/demo/interactive_rebase-compressed.gif?raw=true)

You can now press 'v' to toggle range select in any list view, just like
you already could in the staging view. You can also press shift+up/down
to select a range. You can use range select to:

-   stage/discard a range of files
- select multiple commits to fixup/squash/move outside an interactive
rebase
- select multiple commits to mark as fixup/squash/etc within an
interactive rebase
- select multiple commit files to discard or add to a custom patch
(courtesy of [@&#8203;afhoffman](https://github.com/afhoffman))
- select multiple commits to cherry-pick

I have been waiting for this feature for a very long time and it's
already made me way more productive. If I need to squash a range of
commits I can now easily do it directly rather than needing to squash
them one-by-one, or needing to manually start an interactive rebase
first. Likewise, it's much easier to select a range of files and stage
them than stage them one-by-one.

This is a **Breaking change**: Unfortunately, the 'v' key clashes with
the existing key for pasting commits (cherry-pick), so we've replaced
that with shift+V and changed the commit copy key to shift+C. If you
want the old keybindings back, you can do that like so:

```yml
keybinding:
  universal:
      toggleRangeSelect: <something other than v>
    commits:
      cherryPickCopy: 'c'
      pasteCommits: 'v'
```

##### Auto-wrap in commit editor

The commit editor now automatically hard-wraps your content by default,
so you no longer need to hit the enter key yourself when you approach
the margin. You can disable/configure this in your config:

```yml
git:
  commit:
    autoWrapCommitMessage: true
    autoWrapWidth: 72
```

Thanks to [@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### Easier remote branch checkout

Now when you go to checkout a remote branch, either via the `c`
keybinding in the branches view or by pressing `space` on a remote
branch, you'll be given the choice to checkout as a local branch or as a
detached head (previously it would just check it out as a detached head
which typically isn't what you want). This is a **Breaking change** in
terms of muscle memory.

Thanks to [@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### Easier start interactive rebase

Previously, to start an interactive rebase, you would need to navigate
to a base commit and press `e` on it. Now you can simply press `i` and
regardless of which commit is selected, an interactive rebase will begin
that includes all the commits on your branch (or if there are merge
commits: all the commits up to first merge commit).

The above demo for range select showcases this.

##### Easier squashing of `fixup!` commits

In a similar vein to the above section, now when you press `shift+S`,
you're given the choice of squashing all commits above the selected
commit and squashing all commits on the branch, which is what you
typically want. This is a **Breaking change** in terms of muscle memory.

Thanks to [@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### View divergence from upstream branch

If you press `u` on a local branch a menu appears which shows options
relating to the branch's upstream. Now, the first option in that menu
allows you to view the divergence from the upstream which shows commits
to pull and commits to push

Thanks to [@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### Find appropriate commit for fixup/amend

This one is some serious voodoo: if somebody suggests changes in a PR
review, you'll often apply the changes, then go hunting for the
appropriate commit to fixup/amend. Now, from the files view you can
press `ctrl+f` and if Lazygit can identify an appropriate commit with
certainty, it will select that commit for you. Pretty cool!

We've made the algorithm very strict so that you can always trust the
result, but this means in circumstances where we can't know for sure
which commit is appropriate (such as when your changes only include
added lines), it's left to you to manually find the commit. We're keen
to get lots of feedback on this feature to see where the sweet spot is.

For more info see [the
docs](https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/blob/master/docs/Fixup_Commits.md#finding-the-commit-to-create-a-fixup-for)

Thanks to [@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### Delete remote branches/tags

Now when you press `d` on a local branch, remote branch, or tag, you're
given the option to delete that branch/tag in the remote.

Thanks to [@&#8203;AzraelSec](https://github.com/AzraelSec) for this
feature.

##### Add co-author to commit

When you press `a` on a commit an option now appears to add a co-author
(something GitHub can read).

Thanks to [@&#8203;omaussa](https://github.com/omaussa) for this
feature.

##### Filter commits by author

You can now filter commits by author via pressing `ctrl+s` in the
commits view and selecting the option to filter by author.

Thanks to [@&#8203;Part22](https://github.com/Part22) for this
feature.

##### Change branch sort order

You can now change branch sort order by pressing `s` in the branches
view (and remote branches view). By default local branches are sorted by
'recency' meaning how recently they were checked out, but you can now
sort by head commit date and alphabetically.

Thanks to [@&#8203;hosaka](https://github.com/hosaka) for this
feature.

##### Better bare repo support

We have fixed a bunch of bugs relating to bare repos so if you had
issues with them in the past it should work fine now.

Thanks to [@&#8203;jwhitley](https://github.com/jwhitley) for this
feature.

##### Miscelleneous UI changes

- Unstaged files are now shown in white, not red, which is easier on the
eyes
- Scrollbars are thinner (and, thus, cooler)
- Keybindings menu now has section headers
([@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller))
- Error toasts now appear for some errors (less intrusive than popups)
([@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller))
- Search history is now retained
([@&#8203;karimkhaleel](https://github.com/karimkhaleel))
- Git log is shown by default
([@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller))

##### More Breaking Changes 💥

- When you press 'g' to bring up the git reset menu, the 'mixed' option
is now the first and default, rather than 'soft'. This is because
'mixed' is the most commonly used option.
- Push/pull/fetch loading statuses are now shown against the branch
rather than in a popup. This allows you to e.g. fetch multiple branches
in parallel and see the status for each branch.
- The git log graph in the commits view is now always shown by default
(previously it was only shown when the view was maximised). If you find
this too noisy, you can change it back via `ctrl+L` -> 'Show git graph'
-> 'when maximised'
- Filtering (e.g. when pressing '/') is less fuzzy by default; it only
matches substrings now. Multiple substrings can be matched by separating
them with spaces. If you want to revert to the old behavior, set the
following in your config:

```yml
gui:
  filterMode: 'fuzzy'
```
