• PR Description

This PR's goal is to improve discoverability of keybindings in lazygit. I've have a couple people in real life mention to me that it wasn't obvious what key to press for viewing rebase options, for example.

This PR:

  • shows more keybindings in the options view
  • shows certain keybindings prominently in certain modes e.g. 'view rebase options: m' when mid-rebase.

Before:

After:

  • Please check if the PR fulfills these requirements
  • Cheatsheets are up-to-date (run go generate ./...)
  • Code has been formatted (see here)
  • Tests have been added/updated (see here for the integration test guide)
  • Text is internationalised (see here)
  • Docs (specifically docs/Config.md) have been updated if necessary
  • You've read through your own file changes for silly mistakes etc

I like the change to render mode-specific bindings very prominently at the beginning; however, I'm not sure I like the change to show almost all available keybindings all the time. In many cases there are so many that's it hard to find the relevant ones in all the noise. In some cases (e.g. local commits controller) there are so many that they only fit if you have a huge screen (they don't fit on mine). I feel it would be best to go back to only showing a general "here's how to open the keybindings menu to see all available commands".

Another more general remark: this PR touches so much code in all the controllers that it conflicts quite heavily with several of the currently open PRs. I have one branch going (not a PR yet) that also touches almost all code in branches_controller; these conflict so heavily that it's going to be very hard to resolve the conflicts normally; it looks like one of us will have to redo the work in that file. It would be great if we could find ways to avoid this kind of thing (I don't have a great idea how, though).

I agree with Stefan, and I'd just like to add that while it is beneficial to those who haven't yet learned the mappings by heart, it stops being useful really quickly and just ends up taking space in the long run, so it would also be nice to let the users opt-out of this.

A hint like View help: ?, view context-specific help: <something-else> might solve both issues, it's not cluttering the bottom bar, yet it allows the users to search both all and only relevant commands.

I take the point when it comes to the commits panel, however other panels easily fit the keybindings e.g. the stash view. And I think it really helps to have the common stuff in plain sight, after watching some colleagues use lazygit in real-time.

The noise factor doesn't bother me that much though personally.

Another more general remark: this PR touches so much code in all the controllers that it conflicts quite heavily with several of the currently open PRs. I'm fine to let existing PR's take priority on this and handle rebasing on my end

I don't think this gives us much more than what we already get from the existing keybindings menu.

I've updated the code so that:

  1. there are fewer keybindings keys being displayed on-screen
  2. if there are too many keybindings to display, we use an ellpsis

The largest set of on-screen keybindings is in the commits view and there's plenty of room for them now:
image

If you resize the screen you'll get the ellipsis:
image

Note that for most views, there is plenty of space for the important keybindings e.g.
Stash view:
image

Files view:

I believe this addresses your concerns @stefanhaller @mark2185.

Yes, this is much better.

We could probably have endless discussions about which commands should or shouldn't be shown in the status bar; I won't do that now, because then we'll never get this merged. I couldn't help mentioning the most important ones below, though. 😄

I don't even remember why we still have the 'o' command here at all, but I don't think this should be shown in the status bar. They should use 'e', it's better for most people.

Instead, I would suggest to include "enter" for "switch to recent repo". I use this quite often, I find it more convenient to type 1 enter than to type <c-r>, mostly because I can never remember in which panels the latter is available.

I would remove this, and include "Edit" instead. It's better for most people, because it does the editor preset auto-detection thing.

Also, I would include "Edit" in the Files panel too.

Forgive the force-push (I had a fixup commit but then forgot what I was doing and amended a commit directly).

I've made those changes now.

I agree: the set of keybindings we include can be tweaked, but it's trivially easy to do that tweaking in a future PR

Nice, looks good. (There's a failing integration test though.)

I'd be happy to get this merged soon, because it conflicts with pretty much everything else that's open...

Agreed. Looks like there's some race condition stuff happening causing crashes on startups. I've fixed it in 16a790d

I tried an alternative fix which locked a bunch of model mutexes when getting the keybindings to display on-screen, but that did not fix the issue.

@jesseduffield
Copy link
Owner Author

Hmm, I figured that if I moved the call in the layout function to the bottom, after HandleRender is called one each context, that would fix it, given that it's in those HandleRender calls that selected item indexes are clamped based on the number of items in the list, but that actually didn't solve the problem. But neither did mutexes, so I don't know what the issue is there. The above commit does fix the issue but it feels superfluous.

I'll take another look at this tomorrow in case I'm missing something

This was causing issues when obtaining selected items
As part of making lazygit more discoverable, there are certain keys which you almost certainly
need to press when you're in a given mode e.g. 'v' to paste commits when cherry-picking. This
commit prominently shows these keybinding suggestions alongside the others in the option view.

I'm using the same colours for these keybindings as is associated with the mode elsewhere e.g.
yellow for rebasing and cyan for cherry-picking. The cherry-picking one is a bit weird because
we also use cyan text to show loaders and app status at the bottom left so it may be confusing,
but I haven't personally found it awkward from having tested it out myself.

Previously we would render these options whenever a new context was activated, but now that we
need to re-render options whenever a mode changes, I'm instead rendering them on each screen
re-render (i.e. in the layout function). Given how cheap it is to render this text, I think
it's fine performance-wise.
Before this commit, we had pkg/integration/tests/submodule/add.go
failing with a panic. I'm pretty sure the issue is this: we're now
calling quite a few GetDisabledReason calls on each layout() call,
and if a background thread happens to update a model slice while
we're doing this, we can end up with a selection index that's now
out of bounds because it hasn't been clamped to match the new list
length.

Specifically, here we had the selected index being -1 (the list starts
empty and somehow the value is -1 in this case) and then the list
gets a new submodule so the length is now 1, but the list cursor
doesn't know about this so remains on the old value. Then we confirm
the length is greater than zero and try to get the selected submodule
and get an out of bounds error.

This commit fixes the issue by clamping the selected index whenever
we get the length of the list so that it stays in-sync. This is not
a perfect solution because the length can change at any time, but
it seems to reliably fix the test, and using mutexes didn't seem to
make a difference.

Note that we're swapping the order of IFileTree and IListCursor in
the file tree view model to ensure that the list cursor's Len()
method is called (which performs the clamping).

Also, comment from the PR:
This 'trait' pattern we're using is convenient but can lead to awkward
situations. In this case we have both the list view model and the
(embedded) list cursor with a Len() method. The list cursor Len()
method just calls the list view model Len() method. But I wanted
to make it that the list view model now calls ClampSelection() on the
list cursor whenever it obtains the length. This will cause an
infinite loop because ClampSelection() internally calls Len()
(which calls the list view model's Len() method which in turn
calls ClampSelection() again, etc).

The only reason we were passing the list view model into the list
cursor was to supply the length method, so now we're just doing
that directly, and letting the list view model delegate the Len()
call to the list cursor, which now itself calls ClampSelection.

#### Notes

Thank you to all that contributed with flushing out issues and
enhancements for K9s!
I'll try to mark some of these issues as fixed. But if you don't mind
grab the latest rev
and see if we're happier with some of the fixes!
If you've filed an issue please help me verify and close.

Your support, kindness and awesome suggestions to make K9s better are,
as ever, very much noted and appreciated!
Also big thanks to all that have allocated their own time to help others
on both slack and on this repo!!

[`v0.41.0`](https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/releases/tag/v0.41.0)

[Compare
Source](https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/compare/v0.40.2...pre-0.41)

Hold on tight because this is a HUGE release! This release includes a
whopping 595 commits from a period of over 7 months, from 40 different
contributors. Thanks to everybody who made this possible, and apologies
for taking so long to actually release it: we'll be more frequent in
future!

Special thanks to Stefan Haller who is behind many of this release's
changes and who has been critical in getting this release across the
line.

I've made a video running through the big changes here:

[<img

#### What's Changed

Here's some highlighted features:

##### Range select

![range-select](https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/blob/assets/demo/interactive_rebase-compressed.gif?raw=true)

You can now press 'v' to toggle range select in any list view, just like
you already could in the staging view. You can also press shift+up/down
to select a range. You can use range select to:

-   stage/discard a range of files
- select multiple commits to fixup/squash/move outside an interactive
rebase
- select multiple commits to mark as fixup/squash/etc within an
interactive rebase
- select multiple commit files to discard or add to a custom patch
(courtesy of [@afhoffman](https://github.com/afhoffman))
- select multiple commits to cherry-pick

I have been waiting for this feature for a very long time and it's
already made me way more productive. If I need to squash a range of
commits I can now easily do it directly rather than needing to squash
them one-by-one, or needing to manually start an interactive rebase
first. Likewise, it's much easier to select a range of files and stage
them than stage them one-by-one.

This is a **Breaking change**: Unfortunately, the 'v' key clashes with
the existing key for pasting commits (cherry-pick), so we've replaced
that with shift+V and changed the commit copy key to shift+C. If you
want the old keybindings back, you can do that like so:

```yml
keybinding:
  universal:
      toggleRangeSelect: <something other than v>
    commits:
      cherryPickCopy: 'c'
      pasteCommits: 'v'
```

##### Auto-wrap in commit editor

The commit editor now automatically hard-wraps your content by default,
so you no longer need to hit the enter key yourself when you approach
the margin. You can disable/configure this in your config:

```yml
git:
  commit:
    autoWrapCommitMessage: true
    autoWrapWidth: 72
```

Thanks to [@stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### Easier remote branch checkout

Now when you go to checkout a remote branch, either via the `c`
keybinding in the branches view or by pressing `space` on a remote
branch, you'll be given the choice to checkout as a local branch or as a
detached head (previously it would just check it out as a detached head
which typically isn't what you want). This is a **Breaking change** in
terms of muscle memory.

Thanks to [@stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### Easier start interactive rebase

Previously, to start an interactive rebase, you would need to navigate
to a base commit and press `e` on it. Now you can simply press `i` and
regardless of which commit is selected, an interactive rebase will begin
that includes all the commits on your branch (or if there are merge
commits: all the commits up to first merge commit).

The above demo for range select showcases this.

##### Easier squashing of `fixup!` commits

In a similar vein to the above section, now when you press `shift+S`,
you're given the choice of squashing all commits above the selected
commit and squashing all commits on the branch, which is what you
typically want. This is a **Breaking change** in terms of muscle memory.

Thanks to [@stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### View divergence from upstream branch

If you press `u` on a local branch a menu appears which shows options
relating to the branch's upstream. Now, the first option in that menu
allows you to view the divergence from the upstream which shows commits
to pull and commits to push

Thanks to [@stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### Find appropriate commit for fixup/amend

This one is some serious voodoo: if somebody suggests changes in a PR
review, you'll often apply the changes, then go hunting for the
appropriate commit to fixup/amend. Now, from the files view you can
press `ctrl+f` and if Lazygit can identify an appropriate commit with
certainty, it will select that commit for you. Pretty cool!

We've made the algorithm very strict so that you can always trust the
result, but this means in circumstances where we can't know for sure
which commit is appropriate (such as when your changes only include
added lines), it's left to you to manually find the commit. We're keen
to get lots of feedback on this feature to see where the sweet spot is.

For more info see [the
docs](https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/blob/master/docs/Fixup_Commits.md#finding-the-commit-to-create-a-fixup-for)

Thanks to [@stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller) for
this feature.

##### Delete remote branches/tags

Now when you press `d` on a local branch, remote branch, or tag, you're
given the option to delete that branch/tag in the remote.

Thanks to [@AzraelSec](https://github.com/AzraelSec) for this
feature.

##### Add co-author to commit

When you press `a` on a commit an option now appears to add a co-author
(something GitHub can read).

Thanks to [@omaussa](https://github.com/omaussa) for this
feature.

##### Filter commits by author

You can now filter commits by author via pressing `ctrl+s` in the
commits view and selecting the option to filter by author.

Thanks to [@Part22](https://github.com/Part22) for this
feature.

##### Change branch sort order

You can now change branch sort order by pressing `s` in the branches
view (and remote branches view). By default local branches are sorted by
'recency' meaning how recently they were checked out, but you can now
sort by head commit date and alphabetically.

Thanks to [@hosaka](https://github.com/hosaka) for this
feature.

##### Better bare repo support

We have fixed a bunch of bugs relating to bare repos so if you had
issues with them in the past it should work fine now.

Thanks to [@jwhitley](https://github.com/jwhitley) for this
feature.

##### Miscelleneous UI changes

- Unstaged files are now shown in white, not red, which is easier on the
eyes
- Scrollbars are thinner (and, thus, cooler)
- Keybindings menu now has section headers
([@stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller))
- Error toasts now appear for some errors (less intrusive than popups)
([@stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller))
- Search history is now retained
([@karimkhaleel](https://github.com/karimkhaleel))
- Git log is shown by default
([@stefanhaller](https://github.com/stefanhaller))

##### More Breaking Changes 💥

- When you press 'g' to bring up the git reset menu, the 'mixed' option
is now the first and default, rather than 'soft'. This is because
'mixed' is the most commonly used option.
- Push/pull/fetch loading statuses are now shown against the branch
rather than in a popup. This allows you to e.g. fetch multiple branches
in parallel and see the status for each branch.
- The git log graph in the commits view is now always shown by default
(previously it was only shown when the view was maximised). If you find
this too noisy, you can change it back via `ctrl+L` -> 'Show git graph'
-> 'when maximised'
- Filtering (e.g. when pressing '/') is less fuzzy by default; it only
matches substrings now. Multiple substrings can be matched by separating
them with spaces. If you want to revert to the old behavior, set the
following in your config:

```yml
gui:
  filterMode: 'fuzzy'
```
