Overview

Sometimes after entering the master password after the PC has been asleep, the app freezes up and requires me to kill it using task manager. Once the app is restarted everything works normally for a while.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open database in KeePass. Leave KeePass running.
  2. After some time (perhaps several standby/sleep/hibernate cycles) when I go back into KeePass and enter the master password, the application freezes up and never unlocks. This happens whether I am using the Windows hello PIN or typing in the master password.
  3. Use Task Manager to kill the KeePass process.
  4. KeePass starts up and operates normally after that – until the next time it freezes, perhaps several days from now.
  5. This happens dependably and fairly regularly, although unpredictably.

Expected Behavior

KeePass never locks up so bad that I have to kill it with task manager. This makes it a hard sell for my less technical family members.

Actual Behavior

This bug has been present for several versions now.

Debugging mode is disabled.

Operating system: Windows 10 Version 2009
CPU architecture: x86_64

Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to assist you with the information provided. This certainly does not happen to me, and I leave keepassxc running for weeks on end through sleeping and everything else.

Does this happen with a brand new database?

We don't have debug logs. You will probably have to export the database to csv and then reimport it again. You'll lose some data but if you just have standard fields and no auto type, custom data, or attachments it will be fine. Alternatively, open the database in keepass again, make a change, save again. The file itself may have a corruption we aren't handling well.

Also, please create a NEW database with keepassxc and unlock it. If no crash then the problem is with your database file.

You can also try running the latest development snapshot, and see if the freeze still occurs. Then try to attach a debugger and get a stack trace while its frozen.

Same problem after sleep mode in win10 with a keepassxc created database.
Additionally the Firefox addon loses connection and cannot recognize it again quickly after restart.
A tool to test the compatibility of the database entries would be fine.

Just wanted to report that I'm also experiencing a similar freeze issue with 2.7.4 under win10 which has happened twice in 2 weeks since moving from LastPass to a fresh KeePassXC database and using the FF plugin. In both cases it seems like it might be related to certain websites that have issues with the FF plugin, as I try to click the green icon but nothing happens, so I switch to KP and I am unable to focus the window - right-click + close, etc. do nothing - all attempts to focus/close KeePassXC are in vain and require TaskManager to kill the process. I am not enabling sleep/hibernate mode, my PC runs nonstop for days/weeks between reboots.

Unfortunately in both cases I didn't note which websites they were, but I will keep an eye out the next time it happens and try to repro to see if it's related to the specific websites. I will also try the solutions presented here, although making a change followed by saving didn't help.

Just reporting very similar issue as dfparent on version 2.7.4.

After updating the "notes" section for several entries in a row (updating with a date), the application freezes upon pressing "OK" or "Apply". Only the task manager (or shutting down) will close the application once this has occurred.

I have also tried closing the database and app and reopening before my updates, and the problem still arises.

I also keep KPXC running 24/7 with the machine in sleep mode at night. Database is original KPXC database.

FF plugin disabled, not active.

Are you updating these notes while in a search? In other words, you are searching the database and modifying the entries in that search?

Good question, but no, not within a search. However, these accounts are all in a sub-folder:

Mydatabase

  • Folder A
    • Subfolder of A <-- this is where my accounts are located (if that helps)

In version 2.7.4, I experience a similar issue when the laptop resumes from sleep mode (after closing the cover). It is then impossible to unlock KeepassXC as it is frozen. The only option is to kill the app application and restarting it. Then it works perfectly. I have no plug-ins installed and I don't use browser integration.

I get the freezes after standby (sleep) mode. I disabled hibernation mode. Does anyone have this problem in hibernation mode?

Maybe it helps if we find out if it also happens when the database is locked before standby?

Ever since upgrading to KeePassXC 2.7.8, every day, once a day, when I enter the master password for the first time to unlock the database, and WHEN I CLICK a subfolder entry, the app hangs. I've waited long, but it continues to hang.

Force closing is the only way to overcome this, as the next time I open the app and enter my password it works normally.

This issue was not present in 2.7.7 and below.

#Update 1:
I can reproduce the issue by restarting my PC, opening the app and entering the password again. I soon as I go to an entry, the app locks up.

#Update 2:
Downloaded and installed 2.7.7. Rebooted PC. Logged into app, no freezing.

So, after downgrading and using 2.7.7 for a couple of days, the freezing after entering master password the first time no longer happens.

Upgraded to the latest release, 2.7.9, same issue came up. Freezes after master password entry. Downgraded back to 2.7.7.
