Permissions

DashClock uses a number of sensitive data permissions that you grant upon installation. Please note that:

  • This data is accessed only when you add the relevant extensions to your DashClock
  • This data is never transmitted over the internet
  • This data is cached on the device to keep DashClock fast and responsive

The most sensitive permissions are:

  • GPS location access (used by the Weather extension)
  • Read access to Gmail (used by the Gmail extension)
  • Read access to your calendar (used by the Calendar extension)
  • Read access to your call log (used by the Missed calls extension)
  • Read access to your SMS messages (used by the SMS extension)
  • Read access to your contacts (used by the SMS extension)
  • Access to the list of accounts on your device (used by the Gmail extension)

Because DashClock is mostly in maintenance mode and won't be receiving major updates, it's unlikely it'll be switched over to Android 6.0+ runtime permissions (i.e. permissions you grant upon using the specific feature).

Because DashClock is open source, you can look at the source code to see exactly how this data is used.

Other apps can sometimes access extension data

Each DashClock extension (including those bundled with DashClock) can choose to allow 3rd party apps to access their currently displayed information. Of the built-in extensions, only the Weather and Next alarm extensions allow access to their currently displayed information.

DashClock offers an advanced setting titled "Allow other apps to see all extensions" that lets 3rd party apps access displayed information for ALL extensions. This setting is off by default.
