SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT TO RELEASE LEVELEDITOR, A POWERFUL AND CUSTOMIZABLE TOOL THAT SUPPORTS UNIQUE GAME DESIGN ON ANY PLATFORM

LevelEditor Deploying Authoring Tools Framework Technology Will be Available as a Free, Open Source Project to Promote Game Creation and Development

September 2, 2014 – Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) today announced the release of a new open source tool, LevelEditor, a fully customizable editing tool for designing and editing game levels. LevelEditor was built deploying Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) robust game development tool, Authoring Tools Framework (ATF), which was released earlier this year as a free, open source project on GitHub, a popular hosting site.

"LevelEditor is a perfect starting point for game developers who need a powerful tool that can be completely customized to fit their specific needs" said Ron Little, Principal Tools Programmer at SCEA. “And with open source, we can work with the broader development community to keep improving these tools. We’ve seen a great response from early adopters of ATF, and we look forward to offering more tools to support the advancement of the whole development community.”

LevelEditor is used for constructing and assembling game levels. It provides a WYSIWYG interface and tools, allowing multiple game designers to work simultaneously on a game level to create terrain, assemble scenery, edit A.I. entities, place game objects and more. LevelEditor is written in a mixture of C# and C++ for top rendering performance using DirectX 11.

SCE’s Authoring Tools Framework, which LevelEditor was built with, is used by world-class studios from SCE Worldwide Studios (WWS) including Naughty Dog and Evolution Studios, as well as renowned third-party AAA game studios.
